If outdoors then you need to ensure that it is appropriate for the environmental conditions that are likely to be encountered such as rain, snow, sun-glare, low light etc. Outdoor CCTV camera security systems Outdoor cameras should either be classed as weather resistant or mounted in a special enclosure to provide protection. All CCTV outdoor cameras provided by Voltek are weather resistant and the cable entry points are sealed. The leads are of sufficient length to enable connections to be made inside the building.

1.2 Light Levels

Choosing the right camera based on the amount of available light is very important for an effective security system. An ordinary colour or even monochrome camera will not give very good pictures in low light conditions although the monochrome will perform better than an equivalent colour one. Solutions available for low light conditions can include:

* B&W cameras with built in IR illumination

* Colour Day / Night cameras

* Use of additional security lighting

* Use of a separate IR illuminator in conjunction with a monochrome camera. When using IR illumination ensure that the range of the illuminators is adequate for your needs.

Light levels are usually measured in lux and although full daylight can be around 10,000 lux, dusk can be as low as 1-10 lux, complete darkness is 0 lux and side street lighting can also be less than 1 lux in some cases. The closer a camera is rated to 0 lux the better its performance in low light levels.

1.3 Colour, Black and White or Day Night Cameras

B&W cameras generally provide better image quality than colour ones at lower light levels. They are also usually cheaper than colour ones of equivalent specification. Colour cameras require the availability of good lighting and will generally provide better recognition capability. Day Night cameras provide the best of both worlds in an external environment. They operate as colour cameras during the day (or in good light conditions) and automatically change to B&W when the light levels drop. All Voltek Day Night cameras are supplied with built-in Infra-red illuminators which enable the cameras to see in darkness.

1.4 Wired or Wireless

Wireless CCTV cameras are easier to install. There is no cabling to run from the camera to the receiver and they are ideal for temporary applications, rapid deployment or where running cable is not desirable. TheDay Night wireless Security CCTV cameras cameras do however require a power source and whilst most will have the capability to be powered by batteries these do not have a very long life – a matter of hours in some cases. Wherever possible the cameras should be powered by the mains. Typical range for wireless camera systems is 100m free-space but this can reduce significantly to around 20 meters in a typical household environment. In some cases there is also the potential for interference when using wireless systems.

1.5 Visible Deterrence or Covert / Discreet Monitoring

For visible deterrence the use of larger cameras housed in traditional enclosures are ideal. For covert or discreet applications Voltek supplies Discreet or Covert CCTV security cameras that are:

* Very small and can be installed in covert locations, or

* In enclosures designed to disguise the presence of a camera.

Many of the cameras manufactured by Voltek are both stylish and discreet in the design of their enclosures and this makes them very suitable for domestic applications.

1.6 Audio

If the ability to monitor or record sound is important then the camera needs to have a built-in microphone. This enables one-way audio monitoring. Some cameras such as the SuperCam2 from Voltek have a 2-way speech facility that enables you to speak with your visitor without answering the door.

1.7 Camera Viewing Quality

The resolution, size and type of camera sensor will influence the quality of the viewable image.

Resolution – This is expressed as the number of television lines (TVL) that the camera is capable of producing. The higher the TVL value the greater the resolution and hence the quality of the images. A typical entry-level camera will be around 300 TVL with higher resolution cameras having a value of 400+ TVL.

Size – A larger image sensor will give a better image definition than a smaller sensor. For example, a 1/3” image sensor will produce a better image than a 1/4 ” sensor.

Type – There are 2 types of image sensor. CMOS sensors are mass-produced and used in entry-level cameras to provide cost savings. CCD sensors are used in professional CCTV cameras and provide a higher quality image.

It is important to remember that the quality of the recorder also influences the quality of the CCTV footage. For example, if you use a high-resolution camera but a low-resolution recorder then the CCTV footage that is captured will still be of low resolution.

1.8 Single Camera or Multiple Camera Systems

Do you need to protect and view a single area or multiple areas? If you are likely to require protection of additional areas at a future date then consider buying a system that can be expanded as and when required. Voltek has a range of products that will allow you to connect and use up to 4, 8 or even 16 cameras. These include:

Switchers – These are units that enable a multi-camera system to switch between the various cameras. The switching can be done in a number of ways:

* Manually by the user

* Automatic sequential switching between cameras

* Upon detection of movement by a PIR camera.

Multiple Security CCTV cameras with Switchers The cameras are connected to the switcher and the output from the switcher can be viewed on a TV or it can be connected directly to the recording device such as the VCR or DVD recorder. CCTV switchers can typically allow connection of upto 4 or 8 cameras. The Spectrum control units from Voltek also have additional built-in functionality such as automatic video activation and time and date stamp. It is important to remember however that using a switcher will only allow you to view and record one camera at a time.

Standalone DVRs – Use of digital video recorders allows single or multi-camera systems to be viewed and / or recorded simultaneously.

Voltek supplies a range of 4, 8 and 16 channel DVRs allowing you to install a very comprehensive cctv system.

PC-Based Security Systems – These make use of a PCI card that is fitted inside your computer. They will allow connection of upto 4, 8 or 16 cameras and help turn your existing PC into a sophisticated cctv system.

2.0 Recording Options

If you want to be able to record your CCTV footage then the following factors need to be taken into account:

* Maximum length of recording time required

* Quality of recording

* Method of recording:

o Continuous

o Manual

o Event Led – i.e. when your system detects motion

* Recording Equipment

o Analogue

o Digital

* Capability for storage, retrieval and transfer of cctv footage

2.1 Domestic VCR

This is a simple and low cost option that can provide good quality footage recorded in real time. VCRs can be used to provide continuous recording of up-to 8 hours or event led recording when used in conjunction with a PIR camera and a VCR activator. When using PIR cameras to carry out event led recordings you need to consider the start-up time for the VCR. For example, if the recorder takes a few seconds to actually begin recording each time it receives the signal from the camera then the event may have elapsed before it is recorded (a person walking across the camera range may have passed the field of view before the image is captured on tape). In these situations a separate PIR detector could be used to trigger the recording and overcome this problem. The other thing to bear in mind is that you cannot set the VCR to record a TV channel whilst the camera input is selected.

2.2 Domestic DVD Recorder

These operate on a similar principle to the domestic VCR but offer the additional benefits of:

* Higher quality digital recording

* Increased storage capacity

* Improved search and retrieval capability

However, for disk only recorders the start-up time before recording actually commences is generally longer than a VCR. To overcome this it is recommended that recorders with a built-in hard drive are used

2.3 Standalone Digital Video Recorders

These are rapidly becoming the most popular method of recording CCTV footage. Essentially a DVR is a standalone piece of hardware

I have a Canon Digital Rebel xti, and it’s acting a fool for no motivation. I’ve used it every day for times past few weeks, and I used it today several times. After the last shot I took, I flipped the OFF switch, but the green night light stayed on. I turned it back to ON and tried to lug a photo- the autofocus worked, the flash popped up, but the display never turned on and it won’t take a picture. I tried taking out the battery-operated and card, and left it for an hour. I also tried removing the lens. What else can I try? This is crap.

Alright so i opened up the olympus stylus 710 because the lens wouldnt start on the whole course. i got it to work sort of if i have the camera facing down…seemed approaching a loose gear.once i was assembling it vertebrae together i saw a spark. this most probably means is short circuited or soemthing. immediately the camera doesnt turn on at all! what wants to be replaced. also, can you tell me how not to procure shocked(the places to becareful)…i dont know how i got shocked but i did. while trying to fix it.

So i’ve had this Kodak Easyshare M853 for awhile, and still havent really figure out the damn thing. The stupid carton i got didnt even enjoy a real charger, it come with a USB cord to charge it from my computer. So i plug it surrounded by, turn on the camera to start the charge, and the red light flashes for ten second and goes away. Nothing. I recently go to a concert and brought my camera for some nice pics… but a lot of the pictures turned out enormously blurry. The probably is actually beside the disk/my computer. I have a Canon digital camera that have a disk used to store photos. I can insert the disk in my computer to belief the pics, but whenever I take it out, after awhile this box pops up that say “No Disc” and gives the option of “Cancel”, “Continue”, or “Retry” and I can’t click on anything unless the disk is in the computer. How To Install Security Cameras In Your Home

For most people, the idea of cutting holes into their house is downright scary. This fear is easily overcome when we look at the advantages of installing your own home security video system alongside the massive cost savings of doing it yourself. With this Home CCTV Installation Guide, you can rest assured you will be asking the right questions, buying the right equipment and you will know how to install your CCTV security video equipment properly.

If you are reading this, you have no doubt already decided you want a video surveillance system in your home. Whether your reasons are due to vandalism, theft, issues with a teenager, or just because of the general peace of mind provided by having a few sets of trustworthy eyes on your home 24 hours a day, you have probably already seen a wide variance in the cost of Closed Circuit Security Camera Systems and are wondering about the best way to go about installing security cameras in your home. Sometimes this cost is due to the higher quality of the equipment, other times the difference in cost is simply due to the profit margins required to keep manufacturers, distributors, manufacturer’s reps, contractors and security integration companies in business. Traditionally, your camera system gets marked up 5 times before it reaches you, the end-user. By installing the system yourself you automatically avoid one of those markups. When you buy a security system from CCTV Dynamics, you get the added benefit of buying real professional equipment, direct from the OEM manufacturer, avoiding yet another markup in the traditional sales process. CCTV Dynamics only carries professional equipment that has been proven in the field by professional installers in real-world security situations. Because security contractors are profit driven, they often sacrifice on quality for a few extra points on the bottom line, we see this as a big conflict of interest. When you decide which recorder is right for you, which cameras you want and where you want them, you can rest assured that the only metric against the cost, is going to be the effectiveness of the equipment, and your peace of mind. Let’s get on to the nitty gritty of installing your own security video system in your home.

We will break down the installation process into three sections:

Measure Twice, Cut Once: Preparing to install your home security surveillance system
Getting It Right The First Time: Choosing the right CCTV installation equipment for the job.
Getting Dirty:  Wiring your home for security cameras.

 

Most of the work involved in installing your own home surveillance system is in the front end of the project. This work happens before you ever cut a hole, before you ever mount a camera, and should happen before you even buy the equipment.

The absolute first step is to identify the issues at hand. This means writing down the reasons why you want to install your home security camera system. Identify what you want to see when you are away from home on business or if you want to be able to watch your front door from your bedroom, or if this is really a ‘just in case’ situation.  Walk around your home a few times and think like a criminal. Take note of the lighting around your house. CCTV cameras require a good amount of light to capture crisp, clear usable images. IF there is not enough light, this will require a different camera, more on this later. Also try to avoid aiming cameras at trees or shrubs, as the constant motion of leaves blowing in the wind will drastically reduce your recording time on your camera system. Not only will this process open your eyes, it will most likely give you insight into what exactly you want to see and record on your Digital Video Recorder.

Now that you have a solid idea of what you want to see, you should take a count of the number of cameras it is going to require. Write down how many indoor cameras you need, how many outdoor cameras you need, take notes on the quality of lighting around your property, these notes will come in handy when we get to section 2, and will allow you to design a camera system that succeeds at the intended purpose.

The next step is to poke around in your attic and basement or crawlspace. Throw on some overalls, grab a flashlight and get to it, but be careful, we are not responsible if you get bit by a spider or fall through the ceiling or if your wife locks you in the attic. All the wiring in your home security system will have to run through the attic or basement of your home. While you are up there, pay close attention to the structure in the areas where you think you want to install your cameras, also take a close look at the area above the room where your DVR recorder will be installed. Ask yourself the following questions:

 

-If I step on that, will I fall through the ceiling into my kitchen? (this one is especially important!)
-How much room is there to run a wire and connector for each security camera?
-Are there any power lines nearby that may cause interference with my camera’s video quality?
-Is there a chase, or opening where I can run a bundle of wires inside an interior wall to my DVR?

There should now be a plan starting to form in your head. Each camera will need one wire that will go from the camera to the recorder. So look to see where in your attic that wire will run. Make sure to avoid going close to power lines or fluorescent lights, as this could cause lines, interference or ground looping in your video signal. In general, wire can be laid down in the attic on top of the insulation, though you may want to tack up your wire to the trusses for a neater looking installation. If you do this, remember, this will increase the amount of wire you will need to run to each camera by a large amount. Also remember not to use standard staples, use an insulated staple or clip so you don’t damage the wire accidentally.

 

There are many options involved in designing and installing your home security camera system. While you do not need to be an expert, it is a smart move to know about the options before choosing which system you are going to purchase. Doing this work now will save you hours of frustration when it comes time to install the home security system.

The wire used for security cameras comes in one of two flavors. Option one is Siamese Cable. This cable has a full size RG59 shielded coax and two power wires under one sheath. It has no premade connectors on it, comes in a reel of either 500 feet or 1000 feet and you cut it to fit your particular installation. A good high quality Siamese cable with 95% copper and a solid copper conductor will give you the best CCTV video quality for wire runs of under 500 feet. Don’t use RG6, that is meant for Cable TV, which runs on an entirely different frequency. The same goes for “quad shield” coax, its wonderful stuff if you are running cable TV or internet to your spare bedroom, but it has no place carrying the fragile signals that CCTV cameras produce. Option two is the popular plug and play security camera wire. Plug and Play, or PnP cable offers the convenience of not having to make any connections since it comes with its own connectors and is, just like it sounds, a plug and play affair with your camera and DVR system. Its thinner, more flexible and comes in 25 foot, 50 foot, 75 foot, 100 foot and 150 foot increments. Sounds wonderful right? Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy? Not quite. Plug and Play CCTV Cables are very fragile, so they require a gentle hand during installation, they are also more susceptible to interference as the wire is not shielded as well as RG59 coax. The connectors on PnP cables are preinstalled, so your hole for your wire will need to be bigger than the wire itself. So, it is up to you to decide if you want an easier installation, or better video quality. If you have many power wires in your attic, we would highly recommend using true Siamese Cable. Don’t worry, we’ll show you how to make connections a little bit later on.

There are two ways to supply power to your cameras. The way professional installers handle the power issue is to mount a multi-channel power box on a wall somewhere near the DVR. This provides several benefits. One of those benefits is that all your Siamese cable can be run to one place therefore simplifying your installation. Our power supply boxes also provide a fused central location to help protect your cameras for surges or shorts in your wiring or for troubleshooting your installation should an issue ever arise. It also means you only need one power outlet to power all of your cameras. The other option is to power your cameras individually with single channel transformers or wall worts. This requires one outlet for each security camera. It is a little bit cheaper and does provide more power if you are using very powerful infrared cameras that require a lot of juice for the nightvision to work. Generally if a camera requires more than 600mA or 0.6 Amps on the spec sheet, we recommend running an individual transformer. In some cases the best solution is to run a combination of a power box and individual transformers. Some cameras or heated housings require 24 volts AC instead of the typical 12Volts DC. If this is the case, we recommend a 12 volt power box for most cameras, and a single channel 24 volt transformer for the higher voltage camera. Also, this is a good time to make sure you have enough power outlets where you want to install your DVR system. You will need one plug each for the DVR, the camera power box, each transformer and your monitor. It is wise to also have another outlet for your internet router and modem. This is also an ideal place to install your battery backup so if you lose power, your cameras
